EFFECT OF GOMA CLASHES ON THE PEOPLE OF NYALEBBE/MAHAGI
The current clashes between the rebels of Gen Laurent Nkunda and Congolese forces in Goma is likely not to have any direct effects on Nyalebbe and Mahagi Territory at large. This is because of the distance of Goma from Mahagi which is estimated to be over 480km, far south to the border of Rwanda (as shown in the picture, click to enlarge), Goma is in South Kivu province while Mahagi is found in Province Oriental. History also shows that conflict which originates from the far south does not spread up to Mahagi as was the case with the war which over threw Mobutu’s government in 1997 led by the late president Laurent Kabila (Kabila senior). If the war is to affect the people of Mahagi at all, it will be in its later stages when the rebels have captured the entire pig towns of eastern Congo like Butembo, Kisangani , Bunia, Beni etc and still they would just deploy in Mahagi but not fight.
